History Lesson: Dukes of Drift

Posted in History on 01/17/2009 by Ian

Most people don’t realize how long drifting has been going on in Washington state. There has always been that group of people who made it what is today. Such people as Matt “Panic” Gehr, Earl Smith, Jesse “Roku” Kincy and all of the other OG’s have made this sport-of-sorts grow into something that draws new kids towards it like some kind of tractor beam.

I’ve had many conversations with some of these drivers, and they all tell me about when drift events were a handful of cars, and the events had almost no spectators. Stories of hot lapping Bremerton Motorsports Park, street drifting in spots where you would without a doubt go to jail now-a-days, changing tires in gas station parking lots, and most of all, forming a tight knit group of friends that never disbanded. Its this kind of passion and excitement that make people come out to events today.

I have no doubts in my mind that drifting is here to stay in the Northwest, and it will only get bigger from here.
